Adjustment Disorder (Brief Notes)
Definition:
A stress-related condition where emotional or behavioral symptoms occur in response to a life change or stressful event.
Causes:
- Divorce or relationship issues
- Job loss or school problems
- Illness or death of a loved one
- Major life changes
Symptoms:
- Sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness
- Irritability or anger
- Trouble sleeping or concentrating
- Social withdrawal
- Begins within 3 months of the stressor
Complications:
- Risk of depression or substance abuse
- Impaired social or work functioning
Diagnosis:
- Based on recent stressor and symptom pattern
- No other mental disorder explains symptoms
Treatment:
- Psychotherapy (main approach)
- Stress management techniques
- Short-term medications if needed
