Adjustment Disorder (Brief Notes)

Definition:

A stress-related condition where emotional or behavioral symptoms occur in response to a life change or stressful event.

Causes:

  • Divorce or relationship issues
  • Job loss or school problems
  • Illness or death of a loved one
  • Major life changes

Symptoms:

  • Sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness
  • Irritability or anger
  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • Social withdrawal
  • Begins within 3 months of the stressor

Complications:

  • Risk of depression or substance abuse
  • Impaired social or work functioning

Diagnosis:

  • Based on recent stressor and symptom pattern
  • No other mental disorder explains symptoms

Treatment:

  • Psychotherapy (main approach)
  • Stress management techniques
  • Short-term medications if needed
